Chapter twenty

SPOOKY SEASON

A few weeks later, Rett and I go over to his house to spend the afternoon horseback riding. My favorite horse to ride is Viola the Prestissimo. She is a beautiful palomino who, despite her name, never goes too fast for me.

Rett helps me mount Viola, and then he chooses a black horse named Titan for himself. I dig my heels into Viola’s sides gently and make a clicky sound with my mouth. She begins walking leisurely.

Rett and Titan pull up alongside us. We follow the horse trail into the woods.

“Leaves are almost gone,” I remark.

“Yeah. You know I actually prefer winter to fall.”

“Why’s that?”

He shrugs. “I don’t know. I guess I find it more beautiful.”

“Orange, yellow, and red leaves don’t do it for you?” I tease.

“Nah. Not compared to the stark honesty of winter. Plus, when the snowfall is fresh, it’s like the entire world is a wonderland.”

I smile. “We’ll probably get our first snow pretty soon here.”

“As long as it’s after Halloween. I don’t like snow before Halloween.”

“Oh, I agree,” I say. “No snow before Halloween or after Easter.”

“It’s only fair.”

“By the way…what are you thinking, as far as Halloween this year? I know we have our costumes, but where will we show them off?”

Rett sighs. “I don’t know. I was thinking maybe we stay in and eat gobs of candy that we buy for ourselves and watch horror movies? You can hold my hand during all the scary parts.”

I laugh, because Rett knows perfectly well I don’t get scared of horror movies. “Right, sure, but I can’t help but notice that in that scenario, not a single person will see our costumes. We may as well watch horror movies in our pajamas.”

“Callie Chittenden,” he says, grinning at me. “I believe you’ve turned this Halloween into the best night ever.”

“Come on, Rett,” I say, smiling back at him. “You don’t really want to stay home, do you? What about Piper and Garrett’s party?”

Rett’s smile fades from his face. “I don’t know, Cal. I’m not really much into partying anymore.”

“But it’s just a Halloween party. Raelyn and Digby are going. All our friends will be there.”

“Mila will be there,” Rett points out.

“I know, but I’m not sure she’s that powerful anymore.”

“You say that like she used to be a supreme sorceress or something.”

“That’s how it felt sometimes,” I reply. “But not anymore.”

Our horses emerge into a meadow. We often see deer in this field, but it’s empty at the moment.

“I don’t know, Callie. I haven’t been to a party since…before you. I really don’t miss it.”

“Yes, but I never got invited to these things. And you bought me that costume, which is like, the nicest thing I own now.” I briefly wonder if I should feel embarrassed to admit it, but it’s not like Rett doesn’t know I don’t have that much money.

“I’m glad you like it. But we could just hand out candy to people at home. Or watch the butler do it if we spend the evening at my house.
